A Piper: Seumas O’Sullivan

A piper in the streets to-day
Set up, and tuned, and started to play,
And away, away, away on the tide
Of his music we started; on every side
Doors and windows were opened wide,
And men left down their work and came,
And women with petticoats coloured like flame,
And little bare feet that were blue with cold
Went dancing back to the age of gold,
And all the world went gay, went gay,
For half an hour in the street to-day.

Summary: In the poem, ‘A Piper’, the poet Seumas O’Sullivan describes about a piper who plays music or pipe. Today when he set up and tuned and started to play his pipe in the streets, the music spread on every side. The doors and windows were opened. Men, women and little kids came out. Men left down their work, women put on petticoats coloured like flame and children with blue bare feet came and danced. They all enjoyed the music of piper and it continued for half an hour.

    4. The theme is illustrating how music can lift spirits. The mood is positive and uplifting. It reminded me of the Pied Piper of Hamelin only it lasted only half an hour.

  3. Which line or lines in the poem show clearly that the people living in the streets do not live in 'the age of gold'?

    1. The golden age of any era should be when such era is at it's peak of enlightenment and wealth. This is mostly denoted with technological advancement, political stability and lots more. The piper only played for just thirty minutes and the sorrow of all hearers and worries of the listeners were gone.

Looking for what you seek, you should check the time frame of the poem, the disposition of the poet as at the time the poem is being written, the entire biography of the poet also.
